Harmonic Society of Newark record book, 1830-1838.

This volume contains the constitution, bylaws, minutes, and membership list of the Harmonic Society of Newark for April through May 1830. This volume also includes a fragment of the constitution of the Newark Juvenile Anti-Slavery Society, which was founded on January 9, 1838 as an auxiliary of the American Anti-Slavery Society.

This Harmonic Society of Newark was the first choral society in Newark and the second in the country to be formed. A group of people met at the Newark Academy on April 23, 1830 and agreed to establish the Society, naming Albert Holbrook its first chair.
